A Tiny Road Trip in the Time of Covid-19 April 29, 2020

Had to. Went on a tiny road trip in the Southwest part of our county. Packed a picnic. Breakfast in Town Lake Park near our house. Had never been. Lovely two-mile trail. Devil’s Stamping Ground because we took the wrong road. I took my kids there almost 50 years ago. Hadn’t changed a bit. Doug had never been. Remarkable thing was how much blue glass was lying around. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil%27s_Tramping_Ground.

On to the tiny town of Bennett. Never seen it. Heard about it for decades. The Morning Glory Cafe, closed, of course. An abandoned Gothic Vernacular cottage on a side street.

Back north to Mount Vernon Springs, also never seen but heard of for decades. Chatted at the proper distance with the man who came to mow around it. He grew up drinking the water. The two spouts were: one for health and one for beauty. Said the beauty one didn’t work for him. Then on to the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church for a picnic lunch at the edge of their interesting cemetery.

Back home through another tiny town, also never seen, Bonlee. This one was nearly a ghost town. Finally, the road into Tick Creek Preserve. That fits Chatham. All this so close to home. Who knew? A beautiful day in the flush of spring. Good for the soul.
